Thinking about disney vacations

By Carol Lee

I had not thought about Disney vacations for a long time. It was strange how a place like Disney World – a place that had once seemed so magical to me – could be completely unimportant to me now. I wouldn't have even thought about Disney travel if my daughter had not brought it up. You see, she is going through that age where she is crazy about Disney. Not only does she like their new animated cartoons, but she also likes the old classics. She likes Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and the rest.

Disney World travel seems like the perfect vacation time for our family to take together. Nonetheless, seeing Disney vacation from the point of view of the parents makes it much different.

Disney vacations, first of all, cost a lot of money. I had never really thought about how expensive they were before, but they are outrageous. Disney vacation plans, in fact, are out of the range of many families. Fortunately, we have saved up so that we can afford to take a trip, but nonetheless it sort of seems like a waste of money. After all, everything about Disney vacations is so contrived. Everywhere, there are people willing to entertain you. It just makes me uneasy. I have a lot of trouble feeling entertained when other people are trying too hard. I'd much rather get to observe the natural world and wander around than to take Disney vacations and be catered to.

Still there is something to be said for Walt Disney vacations. There is really no better way to spoil your son or daughter than taking them on a Disney vacation trip. Everything there is a well designed for kids that they would have to be extremely jaded not to have a good time. Although I have tried to raise my daughter without the type of shallow values that Disneyland and Disney World seem to represent, I can't deny the magic. With Walt Disney World vacations, you get to watch fireworks shows every night, talk to the characters that you adore as a child, go swimming, go on rides, and eat lots of junk food. I remember how much I enjoy Disney vacations as a kid, and I can't deny my daughter that same opportunity. I just cannot wait until our next vacation when we get to go somewhere a little bit less touristy. I have been thinking about the Alaska coast.
